Coffee & Cigarettes

I remember Jake. And the way he used to shake
Every time his father walked into the room.
And Jill would never talk about the awful things she saw,
But from the look in her eyes, you just kinda knew.
And you know it's never easy living under the line,
But somehow most of us made it out alive
We learn to live with our regrets.
Drown them in coffee and cigarettes.
And we learn to make it through the day
Kicking and screaming and fighting the whole way.
And if you can't make it I will still be here for you.
And Kayleigh went to college.
You know we thought she had the knowledge.
They found her under the 825 S bridge.
And Davy had the talent. And charisma by the gallon.
But the crystal took him away before he could rage.
And you know it's never easy living under the line.
I raise my glass to those who didn't survive.
We learn to live with our regrets.
Drown them in coffee and cigarettes.
And we learn to make it through the day
Kicking and screaming and fighting the whole way.
Sometimes when I reminisce, a smile cuts across my lips.
Nobody thought too much of us. But we made our way regardless.
A bunch of punks and white trash kids brushing off criticisms.
Yeah, we made our own way better than theirs.

I guess some people never learn that
She don't owe you a goddamn thing.
Her body's not a prize to earn, no
She don't owe you a goddamn thing.
And I don't care what you say.
What you call struggle, I call complaint.
So take your pride and walk away, 'cause
She don't owe you a goddamn thing.
You say you love her oh so much, well
She don't owe you a goddamn thing.
You even took her out to lunch, no
She don't owe you a goddamn thing.
You say she should be by your side.
You've been the nicest man alive.
Well, I got no tears for you Mr. Nice Guy, 'cause
She don't owe you a goddamn thing.
The PUA says, "Yes she does." No!
She don't owe you a goddamn thing.
The MRA says, "You're wrong because..." No!
She don't owe you a goddamn thing.
And your stupid friends in that scene
With new-wave fascist bullshit dreams.
A new suit for the same old misogyny. Well,
She don't owe you a goddamn thing.
You say, "Well if she wants to dress like that..." No!
She don't owe you a goddamn thing.
You say, "Hey man, she was asking for it." No!
She don't owe you a goddamn thing.
You say you can't control your whims.
She shouldn't tempt you with her skin.
It's not her fault you're a fucking pig.
She don't owe you a goddamn thing.
And I won't pretend I know what it's like as a man.
I've never had to live that daily struggle.
But I know this much. You should use people as a crutch.
And if you gotta rob someone of their rights to feel free?
Well, that ain't righteous. The word for that is bigotry.

It's intoxicating.
The smallest flicker turns into a spark and starts a fire.
It's exhilarating.
Watching paragraphs turn into chapters into novels.
And notes turn into lyrics into songs.
And brush strokes into images of you at your most strong.
But then you through them out.
Your head fills up with doubt.
You've failed a thousand times.
You're scared of starting from the beginning.
But that's just what it takes.
You stretch until you break
And live to do it again,
The worst song is the one unwritten.
But it's exhilarating.
The process of collecting and assembling your ideas.
But it's so frustrating.
To carve off little pieces of yourself and watch them disappear.
But this is who you are. This is your way.
You're not content with the sidelines. You're here to play.
But you throw yourself out.
Your head fills up with doubt.
You've failed a thousand times.
You're scared of starting from the beginning.
But that's just what it takes.
You stretch until you break
And live to do it again,
The worst song is the one unwritten.
Take a shot. Take a shot.
The shot is always worth taking
(Live a "why-not" life.)
So go on and speak out.
Shake off all that doubt.
You've failed a thousand times.
You're scared of starting from the beginning.
But that's just what it takes.
You stretch until you break
And live to do it again,
The worst song is the one unwritten.
